The board of the Klamath County Chamber of Commerce voted October 25, 2016 to oppose a proposed expansion that would nearly double the size of the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument citing the impact on the local economy.

“If this monument is expanded, logging and grazing will be prohibited,” said Klamath County Chamber Board President Todd Andres, “and these cutbacks will mean less shared revenue for our county.” Andres pointed out the loss of grazing lands, timber harvesting, and jobs will negatively impact nearby counties’ economies as well.

In addition to citing the negative impacts to the community, the Chamber board opposes the use of the Antiquities Act of 1906 to expand the monument. Supporters claim the Antiquities Act gives the President power to expand and designate national monuments but 2017 Chamber Board President Elect Wes French disagrees. “Our community hasn’t been given an opportunity to voice concerns or opposition to the proposal,” said French, “Using this Act would bypass public comments and participation. We believe this proposal should be withdrawn.”

A meeting for public comment has been scheduled for November 1^st at 6 p.m. at the Government Center hearing room (305 Main Street, Room 219).  The public is encouraged to attend and voice concerns.
