"The Ledge" wins Business of the Year at Chamber Awards Banquet

January 2009

"Developing a clear branded identity is a fundamental element in any strategy today, whether you are selling a product, promoting a city or running for public office." was one of the messages delivered by Steve Wynne during his keynote address to the 300 plus guests at the 88th Annual Klamath County Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet, Saturday, January 24, at the Running Y Resort. He went on to say, "All successful brands share some common characteristics: focus, discipline, authenticity and integrity. Consider these: Nike, Ronald Reagan, Aspen Colorado. Like them or not, you know instantly what these brands are about. And that is the key to their respective successes."

The banquet, sponsored by South Valley Bank and Trust, is the time when the Chamber recognizes dedicated efforts on behalf of the Chamber and entire community.

Sherry Hutchison was presented the 2008 Distinguished Service Award for her work with Junior Achievement and its mission of delivering real life, relevant personal finance information to students of all ages. JoAnne Carson of Double C was presented the Chamber's First Citizen Award for community involvement, most notably being the leading force in building a new Humane Society shelter. Mike Angeli and The Ledge, received the Business of the Year award in recognition of launching additional successful business ventures in a downturned economy, while maintaining consistent enthusiastic support of community projects. David and Estella Alvarado, Express Personnel Services, were tapped as Chamber Members of the Year, for enthusiastic participation in numerous Chamber and community events. Pacific Crest Federal Credit Union earned the first President's Award for their strong support in 2008, namely, as title sponsors of the 2008 Air Show. All award winners are nominated by Chamber members, and "No one really knows if they have been nominated or won an award until the event, we like it to be a surprise." said Jodi Kucera, Awards Committee Chairperson, she went on to say, "It adds to the excitement of the evening for everyone".

"An event like this requires a great deal of teamwork and support" said Chamber Executive Director Charles Massie, he added, "Our members provide tremendous financial support throughout the year and the volunteer committees work countless hours to create events that serve the Chamber membership and mission." The banquet closes the Chamber's business year and provides an excellent opportunity for members to network and hear plans for the coming year. This year's theme was "Today's Achievements - Tomorrow's Opportunities" and following the economic challenges in 2008 it was appropriate to look ahead for opportunities to improve the business climate and help local businesses succeed.

The banquet also features a silent auction to support the activities of the Chamber Ambassadors. Robin Keady, Ambassadors Chairperson commented, "Support for the auction was really outstanding this year, we know it was a tough year for many businesses but they were very generous with donations." The social hour and auction was held in the great room of the Running Y Lodge and featured music by Cadence Trio. Appetizers and refreshments were hosted by Albertson's, Antonio's Cucina Italiana, Applebee's, Basin Martini Bar, Fred Meyer, Klamath Basin Brewing Company, Mia & Pia's Pizzeria and Brewhouse and WalMart. Dinner was prepared and served by the Running Y convention staff, wine was provided by Integra Telecom and Diamond Home Improvement and dessert was sponsored by Pacific Crest FCU. "This wouldn't be the same event without the support of our sponsors" says Rachael Spoon, Co-Chair of the Chamber Image & Marketing Committee, "they really make it happen and allow us to put on the best event possible." Centerpieces were made by Nyback's and sponsored by Pacific Power.
