Farm/Ranch Succession Planning Workshop at Klamath Community College
With the average age of farmer in Oregon edging towards 60, up to 10.45 million acres (or 64%) of Oregon farm and ranch land is expected to change hands in the next 20 years. It is uncertain who will farm this land into the future, since recent research from OSU, PSU, and Rogue Farm Corps has found that up to 84% of Oregon farmers and ranchers do not have a plan for passing on their farm business and assets.
The lack of farm succession plans can have a dramatic effect on a farmer’s family, the future of the business they have built, and their legacy of land. Having a comprehensive succession plan in place can reduce the stress and cost of dividing the estate for the family when the owner passes. In addition, a well-planned estate can help with passing a viable farm business to the next generation of owner operators – whether or not they are family members.
To help growers take the next step in planning, OSU Extension, Klamath Community College, Klamath Small Business Development Center, Klamath Watershed Partnership, and Rogue Farm Corps are coordinating a farm succession workshop.
